“All right! I’m going to be the first kid in,” laughed George. “Look at all

George and Bizby looked around. Something wasn’t right.
“Where did all the words go?” he cried in shock. Everywhere he
looked the letters were missing. The books were all blank and so was the
sign that should have said “Quiet Please.” George was confused and
disappointed.

George found Mrs. Read, the librarian.
“What in the world has happened to all the letters?” he asked politely, but
with concern.
“I have no idea. One minute they were here, the next minute they just
disappeared,” said Mrs. Read with a frown. “I don’t know what to do.”

George couldn’t believe his eyes. “What can we do?” He thought to
himself. “What will the world be like if we can’t read anymore?”
As he walked through town he noticed all the letters were missing from
the store signs.
“How will anyone know which store to go into? How will I know what time
it is? What will we learn in school?” George tried hard to make sense of
it all.
